MURFREESBORO, September 21, 2017– Representative Bryan Terry, MD (R-Murfreesboro) will be hosting the 2017 District 48 High School Art contest on October 26 at 5:30 PM at Patterson Park.  Rep. Terry sent out invitations to Oakland, Riverdale, Providence Christian Academy, Middle Tennessee Christian School, Daniel McKee, and Central Magnet School which are high schools either in District 48 or serve students who live in the district.  With the Tennessee General Assembly moving from the War Memorial Building to the newly renovated Cordell Hull Building, the top three places will have their artwork displayed in the new District 48 office.

“We really enjoyed the 2016 art contest and the winning art pieces made a valuable addition to the District 48 office.  Anyone that came into the office got to see the talent we have in Rutherford County on full display,” explained Terry.  “With the move to a new building, I’m excited to see what our students create that we can showcase at the Capitol.”

This year’s contest will feature three celebrity judges.  City Councilman Eddie Smotherman, Scott Broden from the Daily News Journal, and Jennifer Grissom from Murfreesboro Little Theatre have all agreed to judge the contest.  The artwork is to be a painting, drawing, printmaking, or sculpture.  All student participants will receive recognition from the state.

“We have a lot of talented students in Rutherford County.  From academics to athletics to the arts, our students usually shine, but they don’t always have an outlet to showcase those talents.  I think it is important to provide opportunities to students and foster their talents.  I would like to encourage anyone that is interested to participate,” stated Rep. Terry.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn., October 13, 2015– I  am pleased to announce the first District 48 Art Contest for high school students. We are looking for a piece of art that best represents District 48. District 48 is the Eastern half of Rutherford County and includes part of Murfreesboro, Walter Hill, Christiana, Readyville, Fosterville, Lascassas, Milton, and Kittrell. It, also, includes Middle Tennessee State University.

The art piece may be a painting, drawing, sculpture or printmaking. The sculptures should be something that can sit on a desk, shelf, or bureau. Other art pieces should be no larger than 24″ x 36″ or 36″ x 24″ when hanging on a wall. The pieces of art will be judged in early January prior to legislative session starting. Judges are being finalized and will consist of those connected to District 48 or the arts. More details will be announced when they are finalized. The office of District 48 is inviting high school students from Oakland, Riverdale, Middle Tennessee Christian School, Providence Christian Academy, Central Magnet School, Daniel McKee, and District 48 home school students to participate in the contest.

All participants will receive formal recognition from the State. The top three will be invited to the Capitol for recognition. The winner’s art piece will display proudly in the Nashville office of District 48 for the legislative session. Following session, the art piece can be displayed in the Tennessee State Museum if the student would like.

Parents and students, please, call or email my office to let us know you or your students plan on entering the contest by October 31. Teacher or instructors, please, let us know by October 31 how many students will be entering the contest. We will need to arrange for a facility, as well as arrange for State recognition certificates, and will need ample time to do so.

Good Luck to all, and we look forward to seeing all the artwork!

Regards,

Rep. Bryan Terry, MD
